Justin MacDonald: Man charged with manslaughter in disappearance

A man has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the disappearance and homicide of a man in Cape Breton this past summer.

Cape Breton Regional Police say 38-year-old Mitchell George McPhee was arrested in Sydney, N.S., on Thursday.

In addition to manslaughter, McPhee is also facing robbery and assault charges following the disappearance of Kenneth “Justin” MacDonald. Police confirmed last month they were treating MacDonald’s disappearance as a homicide.

Police say they expect to make further arrests and lay additional charges in the case, so they won’t be releasing any more details at this time.

MacDonald was last seen at the Irving gas station on Commercial Street in North Sydney, N.S., around 11 p.m. on July 7, when he was captured on the store’s surveillance video.

Investigators found his vehicle, a blue Kia Forte with licence plate FYZ 715, roughly 25 kilometers away in the Ormand Crescent area of Mira Road.

Police say they have been following up on leads and actively investigating MacDonald’s disappearance, including multiple searches with K9 and drone teams, as well as Ground Search and Rescue.

Cape Breton Regional Police are asking anyone with information about MacDonald’s disappearance to contact their Major Crime investigators directly at 902-563-5151.
