Surrey police take over policing in Cloverdale as RCMP transition continues – BC

The Surrey Police Service is now responsible for the Cloverdale area of the city.

This was the latest step in the transition, meaning the Surrey Police Service is now responsible for law enforcement in four of the city’s five policing districts.

“At the start of our day shift, Surrey Police Service officers took over operational front-line duties from the RCMP,” Sgt. Lindsey Houghton with the Surrey Police Service, said.

RCMP said it first began policing in Cloverdale in May, 1951, with 18 members — a corporal and 17 constables.

They worked out of Surrey City Hall at 5900 Main St. in Cloverdale, which is 177b Street in Surrey today.

This change means that residents will see different officers in uniform and different patrol cars in Cloverdale.

“So anyone who phones 911, if you live in the Cloverdale or eastern part of Surrey, an SPS officer will show up to your call now,” Houghton said.

“We still have the same number of police officers. In fact, we have more this week than we had last week, and every couple months, we’re adding more and more police officers, we’re continuing to add more officers to the extortion crisis.”

Cloverdale now joins three other districts currently served by SPS: Whalley/City Centre , Newton, and South Surrey.
