On this week’s episode of ETF Prime, Roxanna Islam, senior research analyst at VettaFi, joins Nate Geraci to discuss mining ETFs, crypto, and the multi-share-class structure. Later in the podcast, Amrita Nandakumar, president of Vident Asset Management, offered an insightful look into the evolving ETF landscape, drawing from her experience overseeing $20 billion across 100 ETFs.
Crypto ETF Approval Timelines and Impact
Islam explained that the approval process for crypto ETFs has historically taken up to 240 days (about eight months), but recent regulatory changes could reduce this to just a couple of months. “This is a huge difference for the industry,” she emphasized, noting that faster approvals will enable products to come to market more quickly and efficiently, benefiting both issuers and investors. She highlighted that investors will no longer face long waits for new products, potentially increasing satisfaction and engagement in the crypto ETF space. Roxanna also pointed out that the new process eliminates the need for exchanges to file a 19b-4 for every product, streamlining approvals.
SEC Approval of ETF Share Class Structures
Describing the SEC’s approval of ETF share class structures as “big news,” Islam stressed that this is a development the industry has been eagerly anticipating. She outlined key benefits for investors, including more investment choices, greater liquidity, lower costs, and improved tax efficiency.
Gold and Silver Mining ETFs
Analyzing the strong performance of gold and silver mining ETFs, Islam credited their success to rising commodity prices and growing demand for safe-haven assets. She highlighted specific figures, noting that SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) is up 47% with $16 billion in inflows, the iShares Gold Trust (IAU) has followed a similar trajectory, and the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) has surged 60% with nearly $2 billion in inflows.
Amrita Nandakumar on Trends Among New ETF Issuers
Nandakumar broke down the critical but often overlooked role of ETF sub-advisors, likening them to an operational extension of issuers, and highlighted how new players — from hedge funds to family offices — are entering the space to capitalize on ETFs’ distribution power and tax efficiency. Nandakumar also explored product innovation tailored to financial advisors’ needs, including strategies for income, volatility, and alternatives, and discussed emerging trends like 351 exchanges and multi-share class structures. With a cautious eye on industry readiness, she emphasized the importance of regulatory balance and meaningful innovation to ensure that the ETF boom benefits both issuers and investors alike.
