Second body recovered from site of B.C. landslide

The second resident of a home that was destroyed by a landslide in Lions Bay, B.C., last weekend was found dead Saturday, officials confirmed.

Search and rescue crews found the other resident’s body on Dec. 15, after the debris flow swept the house off its foundation, sending it down a steep hill, the day previous.

The landslide came during an intense and deadly windstorm that knocked out power for thousands on B.C.’s South Coast and toppled trees. The debris blocked the Sea to Sky Highway for about 18 hours.

In a letter to residents, Village of Lions Bay mayor Ken Berry identified the deceased couple as David and Barbara Enns. He said David was found last week and Barbara on Saturday.

“This is a profound loss for the family, friends, neighbours and all of the Village of Lions Bay residents. We join together in our sorrow and send our love to the family,” Berry wrote.

Squamish RCMP confirmed crews found Barbara around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

The mayor said counselling and financial help is available for residents affected by the tragedy.

Meanwhile, the state of emergency declared last week remains in effect as it allows the municipality to access more provincial resources for the recovery effort.

Two homes on Goldenrod Avenue are still on evacuation order, and alerts are in place for three properties on Brunswick Beach Road.

The mudslide itself, which originated in Battani Creek, remains under investigation.
