Opportunity Knocks for Active Mid-Cap ETFs

Even though investors may be focused on large-cap equities, mid-cap ETFs may be worth a closer look right now.

In the latest Market Pulse, the MFS Market Insights team broke down the market environment and where the most attractive investment opportunities may lie. One area in particular that the MFS team highlighted as a potential standout is the U.S. mid-cap space.

As the MFS team noted, there are a number of conditions that are working in favor for both small- and mid-cap equities. This includes rate cuts from the Federal Reserve, weakening headwinds from tariffs, deregulation, and looser fiscal policy. However, the report notes that mid-caps may offer a stronger opportunity set than small-caps for now.

“We prefer mid-caps over small given their more attractive valuations, access to capital and superior profitability,” the MFS team noted. “Mid-caps stand to benefit the most from deregulation since they face a higher regulatory burden than both small and large-caps.”

Mid-Cap Momentum Calls for Active Management

Many of the conditions and factors benefitting mid-caps are mercurial and headline-driven. Given that, it may be best to tackle mid-cap exposure through an actively managed approach. Actively managed funds can offer more flexibility than a traditional indexed fund, while tapping into the expertise of an experienced portfolio team.

The MFS Active Mid Cap ETF (MMID) can help advisors and investors amplify their exposure to mid-caps through active management. MMID’s portfolio team approaches mid-cap investing through a thorough focus on quality, including franchise durability.

When selecting potential securities for investment, the fund employs a number of different metrics in its approach. However, MMID places a significant emphasis on methodologies that are cash flow based. All of this is done to ultimately cultivate a portfolio that offers stocks with higher growth for free cash flow.

All in all, this strategy blends the advantages of active management with a flexible strategy to potentially find compelling players in the mid-cap market. And in an environment where mid-caps may begin to outperform their peers, a fund like MMID may be able to make a significant impact on a portfolio.
