Many investors have long been curious about private equity investing, but have been limited in getting exposure therein. The ETF wrapper has offered increasingly creative ways to get exposure to private equity performance. One private equity performance ETF launched this past October, GTPE, looks to reflect private equity performance without needing to directly invest in the complicated private equity space.

Why do investors look to private equity? Prior to the recent AI-driven surge in equities, investors were clamoring for alternatives to standard, core equities. The Goldman Sachs MSCI World Private Equity Tracker ETF (GTPE) launched this past October and looks to provide that kind of option without needing to solve private equity idiosyncrasies.
Charging 50 basis points, the fund tracks the MSCI World Private Equity Return Tracker Index. In doing so, it looks to reproduce private equity attributes without needing to get into a very illiquid space.
GTPE looks to get around potential limitations of private equity, like lock-up periods or risk documentation concerns. The index includes long and short positions in publicly available stocks from global firms across the cap spectrum. Its operators group stocks by strategy within the space, including private equity buyout or venture capital strategies. Together, the index looks to broadly match the sector, style, and regional factors of model private equity and venture capital strategies.
Now could prove a good time to add a private equity performance ETF with such an approach. Borrowing some of the high level investing techniques available in that space, a private equity performance ETF could potentially help offset market turbulence from shifting geopolitical implications. For those looking for something a bit different in their portfolios, GTPE may appeal.
