Demystifying Altcoins: Why They Fit in Your Portfolio

All too often, when advisors and investors look to add crypto exposure to their portfolio, they’ll add bitcoin exposure and stop there. To be fair, it’s understandable why many traditional advisors and investors go about gaining crypto access this way. For them, bitcoin likely comes off as the most legitimized cryptocurrency of its kind. They don’t even think to look deeper within the crypto space. However, there are plenty of rewards waiting for those who are willing to do so. Take altcoins, for example.

Altcoins are cryptocurrencies created by crypto developers to help craft new decentralized finance (DeFi) systems or enhance ongoing projects. Many have networks coming online, like Solana, Sui, and Sei, all of which are powered by altcoin innovation.

This, in part, is how altcoins can offer something different than what you would get from a spot bitcoin ETF. Bitcoin is employed as a store of value, but altcoins can be used to tap into returns from crypto innovation.

DIME Diversifies Your Altcoin Exposure

Best of all, it’s easier than ever for advisors and investors to gain access to the world of altcoins. Recently, CoinShares launched the CoinShares Altcoins ETF (DIME). This is an actively managed fund that looks to provide exposure to a number of different altcoins.

Crucially, DIME’s index, the CoinShares-Compass Altcoins Index, tracks 10 different altcoins, as of October 15, 2025. This can be largely beneficial for folks looking to use DIME to gain access to the broader altcoin market. The fund could be in a strong position to benefit from long-term crypto innovation and altcoin momentum. But it isn’t beholden to any specific altcoin to see beneficial results.

DIME is just one of many compelling crypto strategies within the CoinShares fund library. One of the largest CoinShares ETFs, the CoinShares Bitcoin Mining ETF (WGMI), has well over $380 million in assets under management.
